Indium(I) iodide can be used to prepare indium cluster and chain compounds. It is also used as a reagent to propagate organic reactions viz. cyclization and cleavage of diselenide or disulfide. It plays an important role in preparing indium containing complexes.

Moisture sensitive and hygroscopic. Incompatible with oxidizing agents.
