Tantalum(V) fluoride is used as a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. It combines with hydrogen fluoride and acts as a catalyst for the alkylation of alkanes and alkenes as well as the protonation of aromatic compounds.

Moisture sensitive. Incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and strong bases.

Decomposes in water forming tantalum oxyfluoride. Soluble in conc. and fuming HNO{3}Soluble in carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform. Slightly soluble in acetic acid and ethanol.
