The calcitonin related polypeptide α (CALCA) gene contains five exons and spans over a length of approximately 3.8 kb. It is mapped to human chromosome 11p15.2-p15.1. The gene codes for a 37-amino-acid vasoactive neuropeptide. In mammals, CALCA is expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Calcitonin is a peptide hormone synthesized by the parafollicular cells of the thyroid. It causes reduction in serum calcium, an effect opposite to that of parathyroid hormone (PTH; MIM 168450).

CALCA (NP_001732, 52 a.a. ~ 141 a.a) partial recombinant protein with GST tag. MW of the GST tag alone is 26 KDa.

Calcitonin related polypeptide α (CALCA) acts as a potent vasodilator. This protein also has an essential role in placental angiogenesis and fetal growth. CALCA is involved in the regulation of bone calcium metabolism. Mutation in the gene might be associated with the risk of susceptibility to Parkinson′s disease, ovarian cancer and essential hypertension (EH).
