Claudin-11 (CLDN11) gene codes for an integral membrane protein of the paracellular tight junction (TJ). CLDN11 protein belongs to the claudin family. It is a vital constituent of the central nervous system myelin. Expression of CLDN11 is mainly seen in the brain and testes. CLDN11 gene is located on human chromosome 3q26.2. CLDN11 gene silencing by DNA hypermethylation stimulates the progression of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In addition, hypermethylation and silencing of the CLDN11 gene are observed in oral leukoplakias, gastric cancer, bladder cancer, and malignant melanoma. |
