NRG1 (Neuregulin 1) gene encodes a 44kDa single-pass type I membrane protein that associates with NEU/ERBB2 receptor tyrosine kinase and stimulates its phosphorylation on tyrosine residues. NRG1 is a multifunctional protein that exists in various isoforms that play a pivotal role in the development of the peripheral nervous system and during the process of nerve repair. It also has a role in growth and development of multiple organ systems. Additionally, it facilitates the expression and activation of neurotransmitter receptors like glutamate receptors. The dysregulation of the gene leads to schizophrenia, cancer or bipolar disorder (BPD).
