The product encoded by this gene is a member of a RNA-binding protein family and possesses nucleolytic activity against cytotoxic lymphocyte (CTL) target cells. It has been suggested that this protein may be involved in the induction of apoptosis as it preferentially recognizes poly(A) homopolymers and induces DNA fragmentation in CTL targets. The major granule-associated species is a 15-kDa protein that is thought to be derived from the carboxyl terminus of the 40-kDa product by proteolytic processing. Alternative splicing resulting in different isoforms of this gene product has been described in the literature. (provided by RefSeq)
T cell-restricted intracellular antigen-1 (TIA1) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 2p13.3. Alternative splicing of TIA1 leads to the formation of two isoforms such as, TIA1a and TIA1b. It is expressed in variety of tissues, including carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, wilms tumor, kidney, leukapheresis, thymus, whole embryo, malignant melanoma, uterus and hypothalamus.

T cell-restricted intracellular antigen-1 (TIA1) plays a vital role in regulation of mRNA metabolism. It acts as a suppressor of mRNA decay of SKP2 (S-phase kinase-associated protein 2). It also induces translation of CCNA2 (cyclin A2) mRNAs. Variations in the gene expression leads to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In addition, mutation in the gene is also associated with the pathogenesis of Welander distal myopathy (WDM).
